A report released by Sen. Richard Blumenthal, ranking member of the U.S. Senate Permanent Subcommittee on Investigations, says Tether’s USDT has become a significant channel for Iranian financial activity and funding linked to proxy groups including Hezbollah. Investigators analyzed 846 crypto wallets sanctioned by the United States or Israel in connection with Iran and found that 84% had transacted exclusively or nearly exclusively in USDT, including activity tied to moving funds across borders and supporting Iran’s currency through the Central Bank of Iran. Blumenthal called for Treasury and Justice Department investigations into Tether. Tether rejected the characterization and said it supported the freezing of nearly US$550 million in Iran-linked USDT in 2026.
